Bromine bails out big power plants . 15304

Element is key to reducing MERCURY EMISSIONS from coal -fired electricity plants.

Until 2013, it appeared that activated carbon would be the most widely used technology to capture

mercury in power plant smokestacks. But treated with bromine , the carbon does double duty by

oxidizing mercury and capturing more of the neurotoxin than the untreated variety does.

U.S. coal-burning utilities, responsible for nearly 40% of the country's electricity, would emit 48 tons

of the neurotoxic element annually. By 2018 , When all U.S, regulations are expected to be in effect,

plant operators will use more than 27 million 1b of bromine.

Other treatment preserve the value of gypsum recovered in power plant equipment meant to capture

another air pollutant , sulfur dioxide. Many utilities sell the recovered gypsum to wallboard makers.

Activated for growth. 150303

Calgon's main business , accounting for about 85% of its $ 548 million in 2013 sales, is activated

carbon, a form of carbon that has been processed with oxygen to create million of tiny pores.

one gram of activated carbon has a surface area equivalent to five tennis courts, or nearly 13,000sqft

Calgon makes 150 million 1b per year of activated carbon , all of it from coal.

Mercury removal is the largest single application that has ever come along for activated carbon.

Consider that the U.S. market today is only 600 million 1b of activated carbon per year. for mercury

removal, we're talking about an additional U.S. market of anywhere from 350 million to 550 million.

Also emerging as a business for Calgon is a system that kills microorganisms in ship ballast water

with ultraviolet light . part of the firm's $ 54 million -per-year equipment business, the system helps

prevent the spread of nonnative aquatic species in lakes rivers, and coastal waters.

you are looking at a $ 28 billion market for ballast water treatment, about 40,000 ships will have to be

retrofitted.
